Part 1:
Streak taps the tip of his shoe against a curved rock. 'Shaped', he thinks to himself. He doesn't like the feel of it, as if something dark had touched it. It is hard to imagine that the mountain, that once stood here, was his birth place and his home, at least for a while. The creases on his forehead deepen as he looks down on the rubble. 'Did they reshape the mountain before it fell?' A question easily answered with only one touch, but Streak refuses. Why stir up the past while the future lies ahead. 'I already felt enough of this place', he thinks. Streak lifts his gaze, following the rubble up the steep hill. Atop stands his sister, quiet and staring out in front of her. It has not escaped his attention how quiet the little bug has become once they reached the ruins. Sitting on Neavia's shoulder, Berrycheeks stares at the hard cold ground.
“GONE... ALL GONE!” The Preserver almost whimpers in her ear. “ALL BERRYCHEEKS FRIENDS GONE.”
“You don't know what happened, Berrycheeks.” Neavia speaks gently. “For all we know each and everyone of your friends made it out in time. They have wings, afterall.”
“YES YES! BIG WINGS LIKE BERRYCHEEKS!” The little creatures lights up instantly and sets off into the air, flying circles around Neavia's head. “WE GO FIND BERRYCHEEKS FRIENDS NOW NOW!”
“We will, little one.” Neavia holds out her hand and Berrycheeks lands in her palm. “Once we know which direction to go in.”
“Neavia, time to go.” Streak shouts as he effortlessly soars towards his sister. “No point in wasting our time here.”
“So much death.” Neavia sighs. “This place turned out to be what our parents feared the most.”
Neavia looks up at her brother and places Berrycheeks on her shoulder.
“Yes, let us leave this place.” She says. “Elzar and Yori aren't here.”
“You know that for a fact?”
“Yes, and so do you. If they were dead, we would know.”
With those words Neavia lifts off, soaring upward, Streak following instantly.
“Where do we go now?” She asks, picking up speed as they fly higher and up into the sky.
*We go South!* Streak sends, knowing better than to shout up wind.
*The Burning Wasteland?* Neavia is slightly shocked.
*If Elzar and Yori found the remains of the mountains, as we did, surely the next place to go would be the dessert.*
*Is that a good idea? We have no supplies, no shelter... Who's to say they survived the crossing, back then? If our parents-*
*Hey, you said they are still alive, right?* He gives Neavia a little nudge with his elbow. *So stop that worrying and let's get-*
His send is suddenly cut off by a loud screeching sound coming from behind. The siblings both look over their shoulder to find a gigantic bird flying in their wake. For any other, this scene would look horrifying, a hunter stalking its prey in the sky. Neavia and Streak dodge the wings in time and slow their flight. The bird didn't hunt for them, it wants something else. It soars out in front of them, turns and makes its way back.
*Is that what I think it is?* Neavia touches her brother's shoulder to stop him from pursuing the animal. *Stop! You don't know if he is trustworthy!*
“She looks perfectly harmless, sister. Besides, if she wanted us killed, she would have done so already.”
And with those words Streak races towards the bird, meeting her halfway, spinning circles around her, soaring underneath her wings.
“TEEHEEE! FLY HIGHTHING REMEMBERS! FLY HIGHTHING WILL SIT ON BACK AND BRING US TO BERRYCHEEKS FRIENDS!”
Berrycheeks flies after Streak and, in a panic, Neavia reaches for the Preserver.
“Oh no, little one! He might think you're food!”
The Preserver doesn't listen, but Neavia is faster in flight and catches him between both hands. Berrycheeks peeks from underneath her fingers, giving her a big Preserver smile.
“AW! BEAUTIFUL BLUE FLY HIGHTING NEED NO WORRIES ABOUT OLD BERRYCHEEKS. BERRYCHEEKS KNOWS!”
After a moment of hesitation, Neavia sets the Preserver free and watches as it closes in on the big bird. To her relief it responds in a playful manner. It dives down and makes a looping as it screeches in contentment. Never would she have thought this possible. The stories her parents used to tell were not exaggerated. Something else catches Neavia's eye and she gasps in silence. On the back of the bird Streak, grasping the huge feathers, is holding on for his dear life.
*Don't worry, sister! We can make a harness so we can ride her, just like they used to do!*
The night has fallen. Neavia and Streak have been flying for hours, covering great lengths of the country below. The landscape is visibly changing. The forests are thinning, the rocks are changing and the water seems to become more scares.
*Maybe we should land for the night, brother? There might not be water in sight for a long time.*
*We're okay, we stopped only a while back. It's safer to travel by night.*
*Yes, but the bird needs rest as well.*
*Nonsense, she is fine, sister. We continue.*
